Introduction to the IIJM

The International Jacques Maritain Institute is a non-profit cultural association with legal status which promotes the research and study of humanity, culture and modern society.

The Institute was established in 1974 on the initiative of an international group of intellectuals and world representatives of the cultural, artistic, academic, ecclesiastical and political worlds, inspired by the reflexions of the French philosopher, and convinced of the importance of his personalist inspiration in the face of the challenges of the contemporary world.

The Institute is based in Rome and operates through a network of national associates and collaborating associations.

At the IIJM you can find the Library of the Person, specialized in works by and on Jacques and Raïssa Maritain, and on personalism and cultural policies. The Institute has operative relations with UNESCO and in 1996 it was admitted to the FAO with a liaison status. It also collaborates with NGOs, governments and other UN agencies.

The Institute has hosted the UNESCO Chair of “Peace, Cultural Development and Cultural Policies" since 1999.
